2016 - May -- Letter From the President

Dear Knights and Ladies,

I am honored to have been elected by the board as the new President of your Southeast High School Alumni Association. Following Angela Bennett's tenure as President, I know I have some big shoes to fill in the position. With your support, I am confident I will be up to the task.

One of the association's main ongoing projects is the hanging of all class shields in the Alumni Museum at Southeast. Plans to hang the shields have been prepared and fundraising has commenced. Getting estimates from contractors of the exact project cost is underway so we can know precisely the amount of dollars we need to raise to be able to display the shields. We encourage you to donate whatever you can to bring this effort to completion. Our goal is to have the shield hanging completed in 2016.

On a related matter, many alumni from classes in the 1960s and earlier have asked why there are not more items from their respective classes on display in the Alumni Museum. Although the association does have all class shields, the Round Table, two full size Knights in armour, yearbooks from most classes and selected other artifacts (many of which have been donated by alumni, faculty and staff), we have relatively few other items from the 1960s and earlier.

Prior to the formation of the Alumni Association in 2007, Southeast had undergone some major construction projects and had several different educational areas of emphasis. We surmise that during these years either the district or contractors hired by the district removed or discarded much of the memorabilia and artifacts from earlier classes. As it was, several members of the current board worked feverishly during the summer of 2007 to "rescue" the vast majority of Southeast artifacts now in the Alumni Association's possession. By virtue of an agreement between the association and the school district in 2008, these Southeast items were formally conveyed to the Alumni Association. We regret not having many items from the Castle's earlier years, but are thankful we have been able to recover as much as we have.

Please help us in our effort to keep the memory and traditions of Southeast alive. If you are not currently an Alumni Association member, I urge you to join. The cost is only $10 annually. With your support, we can do it.
